Light and Shadows

Yesterday, we began our Lights and Shadows topic. We went outside in the morning and drew around our shadows and three hours later we went to check if they had moved. We noticed that the shadows had changed position and were now turning slightly clockwise, they had also shrunk a lot too!
Why was this happening?
Firstly, we thought about how the shadow itself was created. The sun creates light and since the light from the sun cannot go through your body, you get a shadow in front of you (when the sun is behind you). You are blocking the light source.

Why were our shadows moving?
The earth is spinning which causes the sun to be shining on a different spot on the earth, which is why our shadows kept moving directions.  Since the earth spins in the same direction all the time, the shadow always moves in the same direction as well.

I think this is going to be a fascinating topic Year 3 :)

No Homework

Dear Parents,

Homework has not been set this week as it usually aims to reflect what the children have learnt during the previous week. Homework will begin again next Monday.

Thank you,

Miss Campbell

Kitchen Roll Tubes Needed!

Dear Parents,

Please do not throw away any of your kitchen roll tubes, if you happen to have any spare over the next week or two. I would very much like to use these for an upcoming art lesson. Each child will need one tube. If you have more than one spare, please do not hesitate to send more in.

Thank you,

Miss Campbell

Hieroglyphics

To kick start our new topic 'Ancient Egypt', we had great fun writing our names and other secret messages in hieroglyphic writing. Egyptian writing called hieroglyphics uses pictures to represent different objects, actions, sounds or ideas. There were more than 700 hieroglyphs, we've studied 28 of them already! Some pictures stand for whole words. Here are some examples...

How do we read hieroglyphics?
You need to look closely at the hieroglyphs to find out. It depends on which way the people or animals are facing. For example, if an animal hieroglyph faces right, you read from right to left. If it faces left, you read from left to right (the same way that we do). Just to confuse you, sometimes they read Hieroglyphs from top to bottom too! We used all of these methods which made our messages very tricky to read!

Check out this site for more information on hieroglyphs...

Aztecs Winners

Dear Parents,

Please note that if your child is in the Aztecs, he/she is allowed to attend school tomorrow in non-uniform. This is an end of term treat for the winning house team.

Who Are We?

During PSHE, we have been discussing what makes us who we are. The children drew and wrote whatever was in their minds. The only rule was that when something popped in, they had to draw/write it down. They were not allowed to think of something different. Our minds quickly filled a blank page with interesting, peculiar, and incredible thoughts.

Unfortunately, James, Diego and Jack were all absent during this lesson but I heard they were terrific players and made a great contribution to their football tournament!

Angles

This week, the children in Miss Campbell's maths group have been learning about angles. We now know how to name and recognize different angles as well as measure them using a protractor. Great work everyone!

Type of AngleDescription
Acute Anglean angle that is less than 90°
Right Anglean angle that is 90° exactly
Obtuse Anglean angle that is greater than 90° but
less than 180°
Straight Anglean angle that is 180° exactly
Reflex Anglean angle that is greater than 180°
