Ascot's spooky Friday.

In case you didn't already know...today is Halloween. Wooooooooooo!
Year 4P’s costumes were terrifically scary and Miss Prest was certainly afraid of some of the masks.
We started the day with a catwalk to show off our outfits and awards were given for the best pose, costume and walk!

We then assembled into teams and designed and carved some pumpkins (well, watermelons).

To finish this gruesome task we mixed in some spooky science to see our pumpkins explode and 'vomit' foamy guts!

Y4P know the trick and may tell you if you ask nicely ;)

Googly Oreo eyes.

To get into the Halloween spirit we made some googly eyes using Oreos, icing sugar, food colouring and m&ms.

We were then asked to design a monster using these eyes but there was a catch ...we could only use junk we found around the classroom.
What do you think of our creations?

Temperature

To kick start our temperature topic we discussed different ways we could estimate temperature. After deciding on a scale of 1 – 10 we discovered this was quite inaccurate as children’s perceptions were different and it also depended on what you had been doing previously. For example, touching warm water after touching ice made the water feel boiling! Yet touch it after we’d played outside it felt quite cool.

We confirmed that thermometers were very handy devices! We used thermometers to measure the temperature of water. We predicted what would happen to the water after 15 mins and then measured the temperature again. Our predictions were correct, the temperatures started to change to the temperature of the room!

Spelling bee

Ascot sent some super spellers to a Bangkok Spelling Bee yesterday to compete against the best spellers around!
The stage was huge and made the team a bit nervous!

In each category there were over 50 children! But our brilliant representatives battled hard, with everyone getting through to round two, Mind so narrowly missed the final, reaching the top 15 and missing out by just 1 letter! TangTang and Latte managed to reach the finals in their categories, both getting into the top 5!! WELL DONE EVERYONE!! We did ourselves, our teachers and our families proud. Great job!!

Getting some last-minute practice in!

3 Judges; a bit like X factor!

A well deserved lunch break...

Then Year 4 and 5 took to the stage!

The finalists!

...so close!!
