A Chembakolli Village
This week, our India topic comes to an end. We have thoroughly enjoyed finding out about a different way of life and comparing it to our own has been fascinating.
During art lessons we have been creating a Chembakoli village (this is a small village in the south of India), first we learnt about the conditions of housing and then we looked at the surrounding environment. After that, we used the knowledge that we had acquired to draw a plan of a village. Finally, we brought these to life and created our very own 3D models.
Here are the results...

Waterproof Materials
During science lessons, Year 3 continue to investigate the properties of different materials. This week, we are exploring waterproofing. If materials do not absorb water at all they are said to be waterproof, a property that can be very useful for example in clothing, packaging and housing.
We decided to experiment which materials would be the most practical in making an effective umbrella. The children made their very own umbrellas out of a variety of materials, then they dropped water onto these. We all watched carefully to see which umbrellas would absorb or repel the water. This was measured by observing the number of drops and the length of time that they stayed on the umbrella.
Children made umbrellas from newspaper, plastic, tissue paper, card board, and crepe paper. Can you guess which were the most waterproof? That's right, it was the PLASTIC umbrellas that repelled the water droplets.

Finally, we decided to work together to make one big umbrella made out of lots of different materials!
Class Party
During this half-term, the children have all worked incredibly hard. I have been extremely impressed with their outstanding behavior and positive attitude towards learning. For this reason, we are planning to celebrate with an end of term party on Friday afternoon. Children are allowed to bring in a small snack to share with friends and together we will enjoy some games.

Reflection Symmetry
The Line of Symmetry (also called the Mirror Line) does not have to be up-down or left-right, it can be in any direction! We found this concept quite tricky to understand until Miss Campbell told us to simply turn the line until it was straight.
We had great fun reflecting lines and shapes on our carpet. We split into two teams and challenged each other to some very difficult reflections. Then, we used peg boards to create individual reflections, these turned out to be very beautiful.

Absorbency
Last week, 3C continued to explore the characteristics of materials and we learnt all about absorbency (the ability to soak up liquid). As always, our week ended with a practical experiment. Miss Campbell decided to use this opportunity to find out which teacher buys the most absorbent kitchen towels. Miss Prest and Miss Bialek were very kind and each brought in a sample for us to test. Here are the results of what we found...
![]() |
| Miss Bialek uses 'Tesco Value' kitchen roll , we found this to be the least absorbent. Perhaps that is why is it the cheapest. |
![]() |
| Miss Prest uses 'Thirst Pockets', we found this to be the second most absorbent kitchen roll. |
![]() |
| Miss Campbell uses 'Plenty', our results showed that her kitchen roll was the most absorbent. It was, however, the most expensive one too! |
House Colours Day
Last week, 3C has lots of fun taking part in House Colours Day. Throughout the morning, children enjoyed quizzes, song writing, arts and crafts and finally team building activities. The house teams then competed against each other in a basketball tournament. Some children played whilst other cheered them on.
During the afternoon we had an assembly in which candidates for house prefects delivered their speeches in order to win votes, we were very impressed by the standard of these.
