Home made thermometers.

We've been learning about temperature in science therefore we thought it would be useful to make our own thermometers so we could get a clear understanding into how they work.

The science behind a thermometer is that heat makes the mercury expand therefore rising up the tube. We used a mixture or water and rubbing alcohol and added some food colouring so we could see more clearly. We placed the mixture into a plastic bottle and inserted a straw. After that we made the bottle air tight using Playdoh. Finally we placed out homemade thermometers into hot water and watched the liquid rise up the straw. We were massively impressed that they worked so well!
