Indian Elephants

I can imagine that some parents have been wondering why their children have been so desperate for empty milk bottles recently. Well, the time has come to reveal our superb artwork to you. Again, our art is based on the children's learning about India. This week, we designed Indian elephants.

Elephants have always held an important place in the Indian society, Lord Ganesha, the Hindu deity with the head of an Indian elephant is the lord master of most ceremonies and happy beginnings. Elephants are part of many major religious ceremonies, processions and even marriage ceremonies.

The children have once again been working extremely hard and produced some amazing results. Just like magicians, they were able to transform empty milk bottles like this...

Into something a little more magical...

Well done 3C, you are superstars!
Parents, please feel free to come to our classroom and have a look at our display.

Data Handling

Today was our last day of learning about graphs, we were all a little sad that this unit had come to an end.
To finish the week, we decided to put all that we had learnt to the test and spend the final lesson gathering data about different flavours of sweets.

Each table was given a packet of sweets to analyse and the children worked together to present their findings in the form of a tally chart, a bar graph, and a line chart. Some children even managed an extension and created a pie chart too!

At the end of the lesson Miss Campbell quizzed the children on what they had learnt about data handling. Correct answers won a sweet for break-time. Luckily, all of the children were able to win one!

Just for Fun!

After all of the fun we had making our Rangoli patterns, it was time to pack away the resources. As we sorted the equipment and returned it to where it belonged, Miss Campbell had an idea.

She sat with the class to think of about how they could make the best use of what was left. We decided to give the coloured rice to Reception and use the left over dye for a science experiment.

The next day Miss Campbell came to school with a bunch of flowers to make her desk look pretty. The children all agreed that her flowers were very boring and not at all vibrant. Miss Campbell wondered what she could do to make them look a little prettier. Just then, she remembered the food colouring. Perhaps, she could add it to the water in her vase.

The children thought that this was a super idea as 'it will make the water look pretty'. Suddenly, Logan's hand shot up in the air. 'Miss Campbell, do you think that the dye might run all the way up to the flower petals and change their colour?'. This wasn't the only prediction. Other children thought it would only dye the water and some believed it would dye the actual vase. It was time to find out...

First we got out our flower vases ready with water. Then we poured in about 10 or so drops of food colouring. We chose to put red in one vase and green in another

It was fascinating to watch the food colouring drift towards the bottom of the vase. It swirled and glided into all sorts of interesting shapes.

We began a countdown from the second it hit the surface of water to when it hit the bottom of the vase, this took 99 seconds!

Have a look at what happened...

Why don't you watch this video to see the experiment in full!
Keep posted for our results...
