She sat with the class to think of about how they could make the best use of what was left. We decided to give the coloured rice to Reception and use the left over dye for a science experiment.
The next day Miss Campbell came to school with a bunch of flowers to make her desk look pretty. The children all agreed that her flowers were very boring and not at all vibrant. Miss Campbell wondered what she could do to make them look a little prettier. Just then, she remembered the food colouring. Perhaps, she could add it to the water in her vase.
The children thought that this was a super idea as 'it will make the water look pretty'. Suddenly, Logan's hand shot up in the air. 'Miss Campbell, do you think that the dye might run all the way up to the flower petals and change their colour?'. This wasn't the only prediction. Other children thought it would only dye the water and some believed it would dye the actual vase. It was time to find out...
First we got out our flower vases ready with water. Then we poured in about 10 or so drops of food colouring. We chose to put red in one vase and green in another.
It was fascinating to watch the food colouring drift towards the bottom of the vase. It swirled and glided into all sorts of interesting shapes.
We began a countdown from the second it hit the surface of water to when it hit the bottom of the vase, this took 99 seconds!
